HTA supporting the industry with new event launch alongside National Plant Show

hta 2016With supporting UK Horticulture at the heart of everything the HTA does, listening to our members and the industry is key, and the HTA is continuously staying in touch with its members to identify and deal with key garden issues and opportunities.

Seven years ago the HTA launched the National Plant Show at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry to support our Growers and give them the right show at the right time of the year for them to do business. The event is now a staple date in the horticultural calendar and to enhance this offering and give a platform to even more of the industry the HTA will be introducing the co-located HTA Nursery Supply Show.

Running as a separate exhibition in hall 3 at Stoneleigh alongside the HTA National Plant Show on the 20th and 21stJune 2017 the HTA Nursery Supply Show will give even more to our visitors by both enabling them to buy plants but to also look at the critical elements that support plant sales, nursery retail and garden centres.

Along with the National Plant Show this enhancement aims to be the number one show in UK for plants and nursery suppliers. The premier buying event for Garden Retailers, Retail Nurseries and Growers.

The exhibition will follow the back to basics formula of the National Plant Show to allow the product to do the talking with the same low cost stand options for exhibitors to ensure the event is affordable for all.

Visitors can expect to see a range of suppliers from labelling and product information companies, substrate and growing media through to display benching, potting machinery and everything in between.

More details on the free to attend event will come with the official launch in January 2017 when booking for exhibitors will open.

Commenting on the new show, HTA President Adam Wigglesworth from Aylett Nurseries said,

“I am delighted that with the new event, alongside the National Plant Show, there will be an opportunity for visitors to see suppliers with products that help us sell more plants. I hope that the efficiency of having this event next door will make our visitors’ days even more productive and worthwhile and be an exciting addition to a landmark event.”

Geoff Caesar from The Bransford Webbs Plant Company said,

“As an exhibitor at the National Plant Show since the very beginning we believe this exciting new development will provide even more reasons for both growers and retailers to visit the show. The new Nursery Supply Show will provide numerous opportunities to support the production and sale of plants in the UK and help build the strength of the British nursery and garden centre industry.”

Neil Gray from Melcourt said,

“The Nursery Supply Show running alongside the National Plant show offers a real opportunity to showcase UK horticulture through the supply chain of plants. We are looking forward to the opportunity to speaking to our existing customers and potential new customer about Melcourt products that serve both the retail and professional markets.”

Growing media responsible sourcing scheme to launch

hta growing media associationThe GMA (Growing Media Association) and the HTA will launch the pilot Responsible Sourcing Scheme for Growing Media at the National Plant Show on 21/22 June.

Paul Alexander, head of Horticultural and Environmental Science for the RHS and Neil Bragg, director of Bulrush Horticulture will speak to manufacturers and retailers on the issues surrounding sourcing.

The purpose of the scheme is to “steadily introduce and increase an awareness of manufacturers’ impact upon the environment as a result of choices made regarding the components used in growing media”.

The scheme will enable those manufacturers wishing to participate the ability to measure the components that make up particular products, enter those results into a calculator, which will then inform the manufacturer of their environmental impact.

GMA chairman Steve Harper said: “We are launching the pilot scheme at the HTA National Plant Show to give everyone the opportunity to come and talk to us and sign-up to be kept informed about the scheme as it progresses.

“The pilot scheme itself is a very gentle first step in understanding what the situation is within the industry, and giving those who want them the tools to scientifically analyse the components within the volume and type of growing media.  The longer term ambition is that manufacturers and retailers, as they understand the impact upon the environment, take steps to reduce their own footprint and join the audited scheme.”

Raoul Curtis-Machin, Chair of the Growing Media Initiative, comments

“This scheme represents a step-change for the horticulture industry. It enables us to measure how well we are sourcing our production materials in growing media, in ethical human and environmental terms. It is a proud moment for everyone involved in making our industry more sustainable.”

The collated results will be analysed by the Steering Board of the Responsible Sourcing Scheme to understand the industry’s use of diluents in growing media.  The launch will call on manufacturers and retailers to sign-up to learn more about the scheme at the stand.

Salvia Blue Marvel takes best in show at New Plant Awards

hta national plant show 2016Salvia Blue Marvel from Darby Nursery Stock has been crowned best in show at the New Plant Awards on the opening morning of the HTA National Plant Show. The show, sponsored by Hortipak, takes place today and tomorrow (21 and 22 June) at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.

The New Plant Awards, sponsored by the RHS, are the beating heart of the show and create an area bursting with inspiration for our visitors.

Salvia Blue Marvel is a striking deep blue Salvia with the largest flowers of this type of Salvia. It re-blooms reliably over a long period.

Judging Panel member Jim Gardiner, Executive Vice-President of RHS  comments, “As a panel of judges we were really thrilled with the large number of new plants put forward. The quality and vibrancy of new plant introductions is in good hands in this country.”

He adds, ”The judges were really excited by the quality of all the category winners. However, the best in show, Salvia Blue Marvel, was for all of us a revelation in breeding of an already established herbaceous plant. The flower quality and in particular the size of Salvia Blue Marvel was quite exceptional. This plant will see uses far beyond the herbaceous border.”

Plant health focus at National Plant Show

hta national plant show 2016In a bid to keep retailers up to date with the key factors concerning plants today, ‘plant health’ has been added to the seminar programme of the HTA National Plant Show, taking place next month on 21 and 22 June at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.

Retailers need to be aware of where they are getting plants from through all stages of growth. This is the best way to protect the UK and themselves from diseases such as Xylella Fastidiosa.

Raoul Curtis-Machin, Head of Horticulture will cover this subject and explain more about the increased obligations on retailers to protect the UK and their businesses, at the show on at 12pm Wednesday 22 June.

As well as this focussed seminar session, the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) will also be at the show on stand 159.

APHA is an executive agency of Defra. It works to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.

Its stand will communicate the importance of plant biosecurity best practice and inform about new and emerging plant pests and diseases. Staff will be available to discuss plant health legislation.
