COMPETITION COUNTDOWN FOR BRITISH CHRISTMAS TREE GROWERS (2016)

british christmas tree growers associationWith just under two months until Christmas Day dawns again, tree farmers across the country are preparing to enter their all-important annual Christmas Tree contest.

Held every year by the British Christmas Tree Growers Association, the event looks to find which grower will be awarded the title of “Christmas Tree Grower of the Year” and who will have created the “Champion Festive Wreath”.

Open to Association members, the competition involves each tree and wreath being assessed and judged by fellow growers, with the winners traditionally being granted the honour of delivering an 18’ 6” tree to stand outside No. 10 Downing Street and a wreath to hang on the famous door.

Typically, around 100 of Britain’s top growers participate in the competition, and this year it will take place on Wednesday 26th October at Poundffald Farm, Three Crosses, Swansea, in West Glamorgan.

Each farmer, who will have spent around 10 years nurturing the tree to full ‘competition’ height, is able to enter categories including Best Nordman, Best Other Fir, Best Pine, Best Norway Spruce, Best Other Spruce, Best Container Grown, and Best Festive Wreath.

Finalists can submit only one tree into each category, and trees entered must be commercially cultivated and be 1.8 metres ( +/- 400mms) high from base to tip. Each will be judged for foliage, colour, shape and marketability.

Growers can also put forward their example of the perfect wreath for the “Natural” and “Decorated” wreath category.

This year’s competition comes just weeks after Dame Louise Carey grabbed the headlines for saying Britons should stand up for traditional British values and traditions. – like having a Real Christmas tree.

Harry Brightwell, secretary of the British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association, said: “Our members work hard throughout the year to produce quality trees that the public want to adorn their homes.   They are trying to keep alive the tradition of buying a REAL Christmas Tree and making it a family occasion.”

“Good growing conditions this year means we are expecting an exceptional display of spruces, pines and firs, so we’re all very much looking forward to seeing this year’s entrants compete in Glamorgan.”

Mr Brightwell added: “The winners of the Competition feel very proud and honoured if they are invited to deliver a tree and wreath to No. 10”

Real Christmas trees grow in popularity as the first 10 foot trees hit stores

Homebase_roundell_logo_80kbThere was a time when convenience was key and shoppers snapped up unfussy artificial trees in favour of the real thing but now the tide has turned and real trees are expected to fly off the shelves in the run up to Christmas.

Homebase is also selling a real 10 foot Christmas tree for the first time this year as more and more shoppers put trees outside as well as indoors.

The growth in sales of real trees has being driven by an increasing number of shoppers looking to get that authentic look in their home as well as looking for larger trees rather than the more traditional three or four foot trees that sold well in the past, according to Homebase.

For the last three years, sales of real and artificial trees have been neck and neck, but Homebase predicts sales of real trees will rise by 10 per cent this year and the retailer expects to sell one real tree per second during the first two weeks of December.

Last year also saw a rise in sales of seven per cent for real trees that were over six foot, and almost one in five of us (17 per cent) now buys a tree more than six foot high, according to Homebase research.

It’s not only larger trees that are loved by Brits – a survey by Homebase has revealed that, amazingly, almost one in six of us (13 per cent) have had the same decorations for more than 40 years. Almost a quarter of us (23 per cent) have decorations for more than 20 years and nearly a third (28 per cent) of us keeping decorations for less than 10 years.

homebase christmas treeHomebase Christmas Tree Buyer Martyn Hill said: “In the past artificial Christmas trees were more popular due to their convenience and the fact that people had less disposable income. However, the trend is now moving towards, home grown taller trees – with six foot trees being more popular than ever. Customers tell us they love the smell of a real tree as well as the look – we are even responding to customer demand for larger trees by supplying 10 foot trees for the first this year as more people put them outside.

“We’ve always known that Brits like to do things their own way when it comes to Christmas, but it’s staggering how many keep their decorations for up to three decades because they are so attached to them. There is such a huge range on the market each year people shouldn’t be afraid to mix the old and the new and try new styles out too.”

DOWNING STREET CHRISTMAS TREE CROWN IS ANNOUNCED FOR 2015

british christmas tree growers associationTHEY travelled from the furthest corners of the UK and have spent a decade nurturing their perfect specimen – and today Britain’s best Christmas Tree growers went head to head in their national competition.

Out of more than 100 entrants, British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association member Andrew Ingram was declared the winner of the Champion Tree category and now has the honour of selecting a tree for Downing Street this year.

Andrew Ingram, from Christmas Tree Common in Oxfordshire, presented an impressive Lasiocarpa tree (a type of fir) at the peer-judged event, which was held today at Hole Park in Kent. It is the third time he has scooped the top prize.

Also emerging victorious and facing a trip to the Prime Minister’s residence this festive season is Hans Alexanderson, from Santa Fir Christmas Tree Farm in Guildford. He claimed a double win and was judged to have the Champion Wreath as well as the runner up position in the Champion Tree category.

BCTGA Christmas Tree Competition 2015 1_jpgBoth growers will now visit Downing Street in the first week of December, where Andrew’s choice of 20ft tree will be positioned at the steps of Number 10, while the wreath will hang at the door throughout Christmas, and Hans’s selection of tree will stand within the Pillared Room.

The contest is now in its 17th year and is entirely managed by the British Christmas Tree Growers Association. It typically sees contenders from 18 to 80 coming together to showcase their trees and be judged by fellow members.

BCTGA Christmas Tree Competition 2015 2Finalists were permitted to submit only one tree into each category, and trees entered must be commercially cultivated and be 1.8 metres ( +/- 400mms) high from base to tip. Each is judged for foliage, colour, shape and marketability.

Andrew said: “We are delighted to have won for a third time. I’m also enormously pleased for Gary Walford, who is our manager and who selected the tree for the event. He’s the hands-on person and deserves the praise.”

Hans, who won with a Douglas Fir, said: “I am really thrilled. We swept the board on wreaths by winning the dressed and undressed category, and are really pleased that it was a Douglas Fir which won for the tree.

“We find the Douglas Fir goes down particularly well with our American customers at our Christmas Tree Farm as that’s a more common choice back in the States. I’m glad we chose to enter it today.”

BCTGA Christmas Tree Competition 2015 3Harry Brightwell, secretary of the British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association, said: “We’ve seen some exceptional entries in both the tree and wreath categories this year, so judging was certainly no easy task.

“Every one of our members puts a great deal of commitment into a year-round process of farming Christmas trees, so this event is a valuable opportunity for us to applaud their efforts and enable them to meet with their peers and compare notes on growing practices and the like.”

He added: “It’s very easy for someone unfamiliar with the world of Christmas tree growing to assume that they take relatively little time to reach full height, but they are easily a decade in the making.

“Our message this year to all festive lovers is to make choosing a tree a special event for the household – and to ‘Buy Real, Buy British’.”

Nicola Beet, Pet Care Category Manager, says, “It’s important to get ahead of the game. Our aim is to ensure that our retail partners have the firepower to attract the 70% of pet owners who buy their pets gifts for Christmas. So we’re launching a new range of appealing high volume festive themed products as well as some tried and tested Christmas promotional lines, all at great prices.”
