Cranberry & Cream, Fizzy Pink On Johnsons ‘Exclusives’ Menu

A compact growing phlox and a tall cosmos are Johnsons exclusive flower seed introductions for the 2012 season.  Phlox Cranberry and Cream produces masses of attractive single flowers in shades of warm pink and white on low growing plants which are ideal for bedding, edging paths or patio containers.  The bushy plants become smothered in blooms throughout the summer.  A packet of 175 seeds of Phlox Cranberry and Cream costs £1.99.

Cosmos Fizzy Pink is ideal for making a big and eye-catching splash if used as a centrepiece in beds, while its tall, bushy habit and frothy, ferny foliage make it an ideal candidate for filling gaps in summer borders.  The large, pink, semi-double heads create a soothing, almost ethereal impression and can also be cut for indoor displays.  A packet of 50 seeds of Cosmos Fizzy Pink costs £2.09.

The company’s Leila Russell reports Johnsons is still keen to promote the benefits and plight of bees.  “We are  continuing our support of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust by donating 25p to the cause for every packet we sell of our Mixed Bumblebee-Friendly Flower Seeds.  Many gardeners appreciate the value of bees and have shown their support by buying the seeds”, says Leila.  “Since 1945, two species have become nationally extinct and other species have declined dramatically. Of the 24 bumblebee species still found in the UK, only six are still common.”  The mix of flower seeds is presented in a distinctive and eye-catching packet.  As with all Johnsons standard size packets, a free plant label is attached to the front of the Mixed Bumblebee-Friendly Flower Seeds.

Kitchen gardeners will appreciate Johnsons two new exclusive vegetable seed introductions for the season ahead.   British-bred Leek Lincoln F1 stands up well to the harshest weather conditions and is said to be the highest yielding leek available in the UK.  “It came through the bitterly cold early part of the 2010 winter unscathed and was still looking good in trials in February”, says Leila.  A packet of 50 seeds of Leek Lincoln F1 is priced at £3.05.

The increased popularity of squashes is reflected in the exclusive introduction of Hurricane F1 for the 2012 season.  This early maturing butternut-type squash has only a small seed cavity and plenty of tasty orange flesh which can be used in a wide range of dishes.  It is claimed to be one of the tastiest squashes available to UK gardeners.

Also new for 2012 is Aubergine Pot Black F1, which again has been specifically bred with the British climate in mind.  Even when grown outdoors in a warm, sheltered position, it produces heavy crops of delicious, small fruits.  Leila says that in the company’s 2011 trials she was harvesting fruits from outdoor-grown plants by mid July.  “Pot Black F1 does so well even without a greenhouse and can also be grown in the smallest garden or on a balcony”, she suggests.

There are also three new introductions to both the World Botanics and World Kitchen ranges of choice flower and vegetable seeds.  Rudbeckia Moreno (£2.79 for 75 seeds), Lupin Russell The Governor (£2.79 for 75 seeds) and Echinops bannaticus Blue Glow (£2.99 for 40 seeds) join World Botanics, while Radish Amethyst (£1.69 for 250 seeds), (Tenderstem®) Broccoli Green Inspiration F1 (£2.39 for 20 seeds) and Dwarf (Flageolet) Bean Flagrano (£2.39 for 100 seeds) are added to the World Kitchen range.

Johnsons is the only seed company to present its customers with a free plant label on the front of its seed packets. Johnsons seeds are available from garden centres, supermarkets and leading DIY stores throughout the UK and at www.johnsons-seeds.com

Extra Value from Bayer Garden

Garden care company, Bayer Garden, is giving shoppers more for their money this season; up to 33% extra in the packs of Long Lasting Ground Clear, Super Strength Glyphosate and Path Weedkiller all of which use the company’s innovative Simple Soluble Sachet technology.

Each ‘Extra Free’ pack gives gardeners the power to tackle weeds over a wider area and throughout the summer.

The three- and six- sachet packs of Path Weedkiller and Long Lasting Ground Clear each have 33% more while the 12 sachet packs contain 25% more.  Super Strength Glyphosate is available in a six sachet pack size, containing 33% extra.

“Times are tough for many people and so we wanted to give them something a little extra and because our Simple Soluble Sachets appealed so much last season, we decided to include extra sachets in each box,” explained product manager Alison Mulvaney.  “Using the extra Simple Soluble Sachets, gardeners can tackle all the tough weeds and keep their gardens, patios and drives looking smart all season and into the autumn and winter.”

The Simple Soluble Sachets are easy-to-use and eliminate the need to measure or handle the chemicals.  All gardeners have to do is drop a sachet into a watering can, dissolve it and then apply to the target area.

Long Lasting Ground Clear, a perfect substitute for sodium chlorate which had to be removed from all garden sheds by 10th May, clears larger patches of tough weeds and keeps them away all season.  Super Strength Glyphosate tackles the toughest weeds including ivy, brambles and the dreaded Japanese Knotweed.  Fast acting, long lasting and rain resistant after only one hour, Path Weedkiller provides season long control of weeds on gravel paths and drives.

In The Pink Stars In New Perennial Catalogue

A new osteospermum, to be launched at the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show, is also the star of the very first Perennial Collection Catalogue from Mr Fothergill’s Direct. Called In the Pink, it was bred by Fairweather’s Nursery of Hampshire and will feature as part of the exhibit staged by the renowned Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants at the world-famous event. Mr Fothergill’s is delighted to have secured stocks of this outstanding new variety, which has been thoroughly trialled for the past five years, before its 2012 launch. Anyone who buys Osteospermum In the Pink will also be supporting Breast Cancer Care, as 20p will be donated to the charity for every plant the company sells to its mail order customers.

Proven to be hardy down to -10ºC, Osteospermum In the Pink produces masses of single, lilac-pink blooms on plants which are 20cm (8in) tall with a spread of around 30cm (12in). Flowering begins in June and will continue for much of the summer if plants are regularly dead-headed to encourage further blooms. In the Pink looks particularly attractive when grown in terracotta patio containers or as a special feature in summer bedding schemes. It does best in full sun or light shade.

Mr Fothergill’s is offering one potted plant of Osteospermum In the Pink for May 2012 delivery for only £4.95 – a huge reduction of £5.00 on its normal selling price of £9.95. The company’s John Fothergill said he was delighted to be able to offer gardeners the opportunity to order In the Pink ahead of its introduction at Chelsea in May and to be supporting Breast Cancer Care.

The 32-page Perennial Collection Catalogue offers a fascinating range of choice perennial plants, all of which have been carefully selected for their ability to perform well in British conditions

Mr Fothergill’s Autumn Fizz

The newly published 48-page full-colour Autumn Inspiration Plant Catalogue 2011 from Mr Fothergill’s Direct features on its front cover the brand new Pansy Fizzy Fruit Salad Mixed F1.

A fruity mix of colours, its bright, ruffled, frilly blooms are produced in abundance from autumn through to spring. This variety is superb in hanging baskets, trough or planted en masse in bedding schemes.

A pack of 150 miniplugs of Pansy Fizzy Fruit Salad Mixed F1 costs just £6.00. Orders can be accepted until the end of August 2011 for delivery from mid September 2011.

It is joined by the brand new Pansy Fizzy Passion Fruit F1, a carefully chosen blend of creamy yellows and reds with all the attributes of Fizzy Fruit Salad Mixed F1

Mr Fothergill’s reports violas are now even more popular with its customers than pansies – and one which looks set to turn heads is the brand new Viola Bunny Ears series in Lavender and Yellow, Red and White, Violet and White and Purple and Yellow. Bunny Ears are so named due to the resemblance of the flowers to a rabbit’s face. They arrived unexpectedly in a breeding programme and have been developed through several years. Well suited to containers, bedding or edging, the compact, floriferous plants reach just 8in (20cm) and will flower freely for many weeks from autumn onwards. Three potted plants of any variety cost £9.95, with six offered at a money-saving £17.90. Buy one of each for £12.95 or two of each for only £19.90. Orders can be accepted until the end of September, with delivery from mid September 2011.

Perfect for hanging baskets and window boxes are brand new Violas Avalanche Yellow Pink Wing F1 and Avalanche Pink Blush F1, with their mounded, gently spreading habit. Both these little beauties are notable for their free flowering nature and the length of their show. Look out also for the brand new Violas Desert Fire and Blueberry Swirl from the weather-tolerant Sorbet series, both chosen by the Mr Fothergill’s team as being the star performers of this superb series.

Few spring blooms are more evocative or beautiful than primroses and the Autumn Inspiration catalogue features four brand new varieties. Primrose Rubens Mixed F1 is a fully double blend of rich, jewel-like colours which will sparkle in the late winter and spring garden. Some colours have the bonus of a delightful fragrance and all the blooms hold their shape and colour well, bringing cheer to beds, borders and containers at a grey time of year. A pack of 44 plugs, plus 22 extra free, cost £14.95, while two packs, plus 44 free, are priced at just £26.90. Primrose Rubens Mixed F1 grows up to 8in (20cm).

Equally enchanting is Polyanthus Elpiro F1, the golden yellow blooms of which are both early and scented, flowering freely in terrace pots or in beds and borders. A pack of 44 plugs, plus 22 extra free, cost £12.95, while two packs, plus 44 free, are priced at just £22.90.  Elpiro F1 reaches 12in (30cm) in height.

Mr Fothergill’s is proud to offer the brand new Anemone Wild Swan, the Chelsea Flower Show’s Plant of the Year 2011 – an accolade reserved for an outstanding performer. This Scottish-bred beauty has pure white flowers, banded and shaded pale blue on the reverse of each petal. When the blooms close at night, this pale blue is displayed beautifully. This 16 in (40cm) high perennial flowers from early summer right through to late autumn. Three bare-root plants of Anemone Wild Swan cost £14.95, but six cost just £24.90.

Delphiniums are some of the most majestic border perennials and Mr Fothergill’s brand new Highlander Series is particularly outstanding.  It has a strong, sturdy upright habit and bears fully double, frilled florets on flower spikes measuring up to 28in (70cm) in length.  The plants grow to around 54in (125cm) tall.  Choose from Blueberry Pie (deep lilac), Moonlight (pale lilac with a hint of blue) and Crystal Delight (creamy lilac), all with green centres.  One bare-root plant of any costs £7.95, with three of any costing £17.85.

Boasting excellent drought-tolerance and total hardiness (to -20ºC) in British conditions, the new Delosperma Jolly Series makes an intriguing beautiful ground cover or rock garden subject. Also known as ‘ice plants’ they have a naturally spreading habit and revel in full sun, where their stunning and uniquely coloured flowers are produced from spring through to autumn, making them great value for money. Five distinct colours comprise the Jolly Series, with three potted plants of any priced at £9.95. A collection comprising one each of three varieties is at £9.95, with a double collection saving £3.00.

Kitchen gardeners will also find plenty of interest in the new catalogue. Among four new raspberries introduced are Valentina and Glen Coe. Valentina produces rich apricot-coloured berries from mid June onwards on spine-free canes. The fruits are full of flavour and juice, and the plants are notably pest- and disease-resistant. Six canes of Raspberry Valentina cost £12.95. Twelve cost a money-saving £21.90.

Glen Coe forms a multi-stemmed clump and gives a mid-season crop of richly coloured, dark berries with a superb flavour. One plant in a two-litre pot costs £12.95, with three priced at £29.85. For something rather different, try the Serbian Blackberry, which is said to have an outstandingly good flavour. Fruits can be very large and heavy and canes are thorn-free. One potted plant costs £11.95.

In the vegetable plot, Garlic Avignon Wight and over-wintering Onion Troy are worthy of note. Avignon Wight is a ‘softneck’ type, the large, juicy bulbs of which pack a full-flavoured punch. It is a real treat roasted whole and the bulbs store well. Two bulbs of Garlic Avignon Wight cost £4.95. Sets of Onion Troy give an early crop of dark, yellow-skinned bulbs with a fresh and full-flavoured bite. It is very hardy and is both bolt- and disease-resistant. A 250gm pack of Onion Troy is priced at £3.25.

The Autumn Inspiration Plant Catalogue 2011 also offers an excellent range of tree fruit, a first rate selection of vegetable plants delivered at just the right time for growing on and producing winter and spring crops, plus late cropping potatoes to give ‘out-of-season’ crops of delicious new potatoes through autumn and up to Christmas.

Place an order from the catalogue worth more than £25.00 and claim 20 bulbs of Narcissus poeticus var Recurvus (Pheasant Eye) for just £2.95, a saving of £5.00 on list price. Anyone who orders plants worth more than £35.00 is offered one plant each of Iris sibirica Ruffled Velvet, Dance Ballerina Dance and Sparkling Rose for only £4.95, a saving of £5.00 on the usual price.

New easy-watering Auto Reel for longer gardens

New 30 and 40 metre versions of the innovative Hozelock Auto Reel wall-mounted hose reel with automatic rewind function will make life a lot easier for many gardeners this year.
Not only does the premium hose extend smoothly with virtually no effort but it also rewinds itself neatly back onto the reel after use without any kinks or tangles.
Always available for instant watering without the hassle of untangling it first, the hose can be pulled out to any required length up to the full 30 or 40 metres. Stopping at any point automatically locks the hose feed mechanism so that the hose can be used freely without fear of it rewinding; and extending the hose further requires no more than a gentle pull to release the hose feed mechanism.
After use, a simple tug on the hose unlatches the drum and allows the Auto Reel’s powerful spring and patented automatic rewind system to take over, drawing the hose effortlessly back into its protective casing where Hozelock’s clever layering mechanism ensures that it is neatly coiled without any knots, kinks or tangles.
Patented braking technology keeps the rewind speed under control so that it never exceeds walking pace and a moulded ball stop on the end of the hose prevents it from retracting fully inside the casing.
The attractive moulded casing is sleek yet sturdy. It sits on a 180-degree bracket which allows the whole reel to swing around automatically to face the user as the hose is fed out – and when not in use, to fold back discreetly against the wall.
In addition to the bracket and all necessary wall fixings, the new Auto Reel comes complete with a 2m feeder hose for connection to the tap, a variable spray hose nozzle, water-wise Waterstop connector, hose connector, 3/4in and 1/2in tap connectors and a two-year warranty (Hozelock’s test units are still working perfectly after the equivalent of 11 years of twice daily use).
For multi-tasking, there is a wide range of optional Hozelock irrigation and cleaning attachments including long-reach watering lances, spray guns, sprinklers and pressure washers.
Dubbed the world’s easiest-to-use hose reel on its launch a decade ago, the original, award-winning* 20 metre Auto Reel and the existing 10 metre Auto Reel bring the benefits of Hozelock’s auto-rewind technology to smaller gardens. All four Auto Reels come in green casings with matching grey side discs.
Priced at £49, £79, £99 and £129 (including VAT) respectively, the 10m, 20m, 30m and 40m Auto Reels cater for most gardeners’ needs. They are available from all good DIY stores, garden centres and online retailers (check www.hozelock.com/store-locator.html for nearest stockists).
Help and advice is available from the Hozelock Helpline on 0121 313 1122 and the Hozelock web site at http://www.hozelock.com/ which includes extensive advice on choosing and using hose systems. Hozelock can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

The County® of Staffordshire rose, the latest in Mattocks’ County® series, has been developed for the Staffordshire Society. Established in 1905 by a group of London-based Staffordshire gentlemen, the Staffordshire Society today supports worthy causes across the county, holds social gatherings and promotes awareness of Staffordshire’s unique heritage. In 2005, while touring a local rose garden, the Society’s Vice-President, Brian Cox, discovered that Staffordshire, unlike many other UK counties, did not have an eponymous rose. Learning that Mattocks are responsible for all the County® roses, Mr Cox contacted the company, who in turn, began the process of selecting a rose for Staffordshire from the breeding programme.

The County® of Staffordshire rose is characterised by clusters of between five and eight copper yellow flowers that fade to creamy yellow. A repeat flowerer, the disease resistant rose is ideal for landscape gardens and amenities as well as the private garden, at home in sunny borders and patio pots. Height and spread of the County® of Staffordshire rose is 60cm x 50cm. The rose has won International Gold/Silver and Bronze medals in international trials.

The County of Staffordshire prices:

SRSP: £9.99

Available from October 2010

As its name suggests, Joie de Vivre celebrates the joy of life. Cream pastel pink in colour, gently fragrant and full of vitality, Joie de Vivre offers repeat-flowering longevity and wide appeal. Its compact habit lends itself to rose containers throughout summer. Joie de Vivre won a Silver medal at Le Roeulx Belgium Awards 2006 and has been awarded the Rose of the Year 2011. Rose of the Year is awarded by Roses UK, a joint marketing venture between BARB (British Association Of Rose Breeders) and the British Rose Group of the HTA (previously known as the British Rose Growers Association).

For the first time this autumn, Rose of the Year will be available in the Mattocks Naturepot range, a brand of John Woods specially developed for autumn planting, The Naturepot is biodegradable so the consumer can plant it directly into the ground. A colourful re-cyclable pot wrap means Joire de Vivre has lots of gift giving appeal and provides plenty of colourful impact at the point of purchase.

Height and spread are 50cm and 40cm respectively.

Joie de Vivre prices:

SRSP: £12.99

Available from October 2010

Pomponella is a free flowering floribunda rose with unusual rich pink pompom shaped flowers emerging from small rounded buds. New range of ergonomic garden tools ‘selling like hot cakes’

Brilliant Garden Products grows from a single plywood prototype to a full range of highly innovative and beautifully-designed ergonomic garden tools which arrived for the first time in the UK in April this year.

About 4 years ago, Graham Renny (a retired engineer) made a device to help his wife, Susan, collect horse manure in the paddock of their Herefordshire home – without having to use a shovel. Collecting manure with a shovel is back-breaking work and they are both in their 70’s. The original scissor-action device was made of broom handles, plywood and nails and it worked extremely well – and not just for collecting horse manure. It helped in the garden for leaf-collecting, grass-cuttings, hedge trimmings etc.

Noticing no similar product existed in the hardware stores apart from flimsy leaf-grabbing devices, they took the tool to a patent attorney and – BINGO! – 18 months later they were granted full patents for the UK, the EU and the US.

Graham then began a search for an established, leading and innovative partner to get his device manufactured and came upon Radius Garden, based in Michigan, USA, who had already developed a truly outstanding range of ergonomic garden tools which were selling extremely well in America.

“Radius Garden licensed my patents and re-designed the tool into what is now the Gator Grabber with telescoping handles” said Graham. “That was wonderful, of course, but in showing the Gator Grabber and other Radius Garden tools to potential customers here in the UK, it become apparent that we had a fabulous opportunity to start a new business importing and selling not just the Gator Grabber – but the entire range of Radius Garden products in the UK.”

Graham established Brilliant Garden Products as a company and began importing and selling Radius Garden tools in April.

“Sales to date have been fantastic with the more innovative and forward-thinking Garden Centres recognising how the serious gardener, the cash-rich, time poor gardener and the ageing gardener in particular will benefit from the ergonomic design of these tools.” Added Graham. “We are now looking for more Garden Centre retail partners to sell our Radius garden tools.”
